I wrote an article a few months ago about how cutting soda out of our diets can help us to lose weight. It was a real vice of mine and I ended up quitting cold turkey back in July. Read about how I quit drinking soda here.
The New York City Health Department has taken it a step further and is encouraging its citizens to quit drinking soda, not only to aid with weight loss, but to avoid gaining more weight. This press release says the following about drinking soda or other sugary drinks:
Over the course of a year, drinking one soda a day can make you 10 pounds fatter, fostering obesity and contributing to health problems such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease.
Along with the press release they released this video to discourage people from drinking soda. If I were drinking soda, this commercial would definitely make me think twice about drinking it again.
Warning: This video is kind of disgusting.
The press release goes on to say the following regarding the relationship between soda and obesity:
“Sugary drinks shouldn’t be a part of our everyday diets,” said Dr. Thomas Farley, New York City Health Commissioner. “This video is playful, but its message is serious. Sugar-sweetened beverages are fueling the obesity epidemic, and obesity is disabling millions of New Yorkers. If this campaign shifts habits even slightly, it could have real health benefits.”
I’ll be honest I got pretty sick to my stomach when I watched the video, but I agree with it’s message. Even diet sodas can leave us craving sugary snacks that can result in weight gain.
It’s not easy to stop drinking soda, but ever since I did I have felt awesome. I drink water almost exclusively now and I’ve found that I have increased energy, no crashes, and my skin also seems to be a lot healthier. I’ve always suffered from dry skin, especially during these dry Utah winters, but that’s not the case this year.
If you’re drinking a lot of soda try and cut back or even quit. You’ll see the benefits as soon as the caffeine headaches dissipate. I drank over 100 ounces of soda a day and when I went cold turkey it only took about three days for my headaches to go away completely. If I can quit it so can you. Remember the video and soda will probably never taste as good as it has in the past.

That video is disgusting. The story about what soda is doing to our society and the rate of obesity is mind boggling. Diet Soda really isn’t a good alternative either. I hate when I hear my clients drink diet soda because I know they are going to have a hard time losing weight.
I think I just threw up in my mouth a little…
Lucky…I threw up in my toilet. This ad is BAD news.
Wow – I made my New Year’s resolution to quit soda and this is definately going to help me stick to it! It is so true though – I gave up soda for three months and lost 15 pounds last year. Now I have gained it all back after starting my “habit” again. I am blogging about my resolution this year to help me stick to it. I really want to go an entire year without soda and kick the habit for good!
