Today I begin what will potentially be my last day as a morbidly obese man. Let me start this post and this blog by telling you all a little bit about myself. I’ll be writing this blog anonymously and will be keeping it as a journal of sorts for myself, but I’ll let the rest of you read it too if you think it’s worth your time.
As I’ve scowered the internet for tips on weight loss, there seems to be a common thread. Nearly all of the articles are written by women. I wasn’t able to find any guys out in cyberspace who were willing to share their thoughts, tips, or frustrations about weight loss (at least in first person). There was however mountains of emotionally scribed content from women who “just want to fit into that size six dress for the party”. BLAH!
Don’t get me wrong, I definitely don’t have a “let’s talk about feelings” type of attitude, but I think that this information from a man’s perspective will probably be useful. I love watching sports, playing golf, gadgets, and good food. Oh man do I love good food. In fact, I would like to curse the man who discovered that just about anything is better if it’s wrapped in bacon. That man and my lack of will power are the reason I’m in the situation I am today.
Something unique about my approach to weight loss is that I’m not going to be doing Atkins, South Beach, HCG, or even Nutrisystem or Weight Watchers. I’m going to go with an approach that seems to be less and less popular as the days go by: healthy diet and exercise. That’s right, I’m going to do it the old fashioned way. I have no interest in any fad diet, I’ve tried them all, I’m interested in a true lifestyle change. I want to become someone who loves to eat right and gets great satisfaction from a daily workout. Let me be clear, I don’t want to become one of those gym rats who is a prick to everybody and looks down on the people who don’t have an ideal BMI. I just want to be truly healthy!
Currently I weigh close to 400 pounds (probably just a few pounds under). I have borderline high cholesterol and my blood pressure is in the high-normal ranges. I plan on being on a rigorous diet and exercise plan until I reach my goal weight of 230 (I’m 6’2″ and naturally husky so that’s a very healthy weight for me). I have a beautiful wife and two beautiful children and I don’t want poor health to be a reason for them to be without a dad earlier than they should be. The good news is that I’m only 27 years old so by turning this around now, I’ll have a long road ahead of me.
I start with a personal trainer tomorrow morning at 6:30am and I fully expect to get my ass kicked. I honestly can’t remember the last time I exercised. I love Diet Pepsi and drink it by the gallon. Tomorrow however, the soda is gone! The fast food is also out the door! Do I expect headaches, backaches, and intense cravings? Sure I do, but I’ve quit before and tomorrow I’ll be done for good! I have a whole mixed bag of feeling about the entire process, but the bottom line is, it’s time! Wish me luck and look back tomorrow for the update about my training (considering he doesn’t kill me of course).
Well obviously it did not kill you because you are stil around!
You remind me a litte of The Anti Jared. You should check his blog out (it is on my blog roll) if you haven’t he was at 400 pounds when he started and lost 200. He has a no B.S. approach and really does not care if he fits on or not. lol Thats why I like to follow him.
Happy you made it easier to comment as well
I al so excited to follow your journey and YOU can do it!
Thinking back to that first day I think it nearly did kill me. You’re right though, I survived
I think I’ve seen the Anti-Jared’s blog before but I’ll have to give it a look again. Thanks for the comment!
It’s amazing to look back on this post. I remember living with this man. I loved him with all my heart and still do. With that said, I don’t miss this man. He was sad, and unhappy. The man you are now is a wonder. I have and will always love you. You amaze me every day and I am so proud to be your wife.
Ryan, I happened across your blog via Jack Shit…..and what a slick & professional blog it is. I will be following. Your approach is pretty much identical to mine….so I will be back later to have a really good trawl!

Ryan, I heard about your blog from Lindsi. You are awesome! Diet and exercise is the only way to do it. I’ve lost 60 lbs. in one year from doing it “the old fashioned way!” Keep up the great work!
